Tricked Out Granny

This week's Spin Cycle assignment: TRICKS!!

My grandma is a bit cranky…well, that is an understatement. If you ask my grandma how her day went you get a ten minute monologue of how bad she feels and what hurts. She’s not happy unless she’s griping about something, or more often, someone.

Now don’t get me wrong I love my grandma, she raised us after all. But after a while all the crankiness gets tiresome. My granny is also the type of person that will make a nasty face when she opens gifts, or complain about how she doesn’t really need it, or how awful it is, or how it doesn’t fit.

Every birthday and Christmas is a pain in the butt trying to figure out what to get her. Until her birthday a few years ago….I thought “screw it, she’s not going to like her gift anyway, so I might as well have fun with it…”

My husband and I were at Hobby Lobby (love that place!) and we saw the ugliest little statue of a tribal warrior of some sort—UGLY!!! Perfect gift for Granny’s birthday!! (Which just happened to be at a restaurant with the whole family). Now let me tell you I amuse myself, I laughed the whole way there and could barely contain myself thru dinner.

Gift time!! She get to our gift, she pulled out the ugly little warrior (that had a spears in his hand –too cool). And she blanks out on me…(I’m laughing my ass off) the entire table freezes. My grandma looked at my mother, my mother looked at me (with the same blank face) and I say….”It’s the God of fertility”. More blank stares---for god sake people it’s a JOKE. Aaaa duh! After they finally got it they thought it was pretty funny, and my grandma put it in her flower bed.

The next year’s gift stopped me right in my tracks at Target. A monkey cookie jar…oh yes it was definitely as cool as it sounds.

She thought that one was pretty funny. Now she’s really getting into the strange gifts, which takes away all the fun. But now she at least pretends to like the gifts, because she thinks I think she won’t like them. I don’t have to hear her complain, and I get a laugh…so the trick’s on you Granny!!

Brilliant! Sometimes, when you know all you're going to do is disapoint someone with your gifts, the best thing you can do is have fun with it! Love it.
You're linked!

Ha, the god of fertility! You'd better hope that statue doesn't really work or you're going to get a new baby aunt or uncle. Great trick, I love pulling stuff like that!

Great Spin!
My grandma would return everything given to her back to the giver. So when my mom's teapot cracked? Voila, Grandma's present! She got her a really nice one and a week later, was boiling water in her lovely new (returned) teapot. All the kids did it.

Oh, I'm so stealing this idea from you. I love this idea. I'm so doing this to my mother-in-law. I will love it when I go to her house and she's forced to bring out the tacky decoration I bought her. Squeals of laughter!

Reverse psychology! I love it! I also love that she put the fertility god in her flower bed! It's even better than a garden gnome!

Ah man! Why didn't I think of that? LOL My grandma was the exact same way. She has passed now but man that would have been fun!
